So, how's that New Years Resolution Going?

We're almost halfway through January, so perhaps we can take a quick little inventory on where we are with those pesky New Years resolutions.

Still going to the gym?
Still laying off those cigs?
How heavy is that curse jar getting?

Let's face it, resolutions are made to be broken.  They're basically begging to be broken.  I mean, they wouldn't be "resolutions" if they were easy to follow, and we're all human, so let's just agree that making resolutions is a lot like saying "honestly" before you answer someone's question....it's a waste of time, it mean's you've probably not been entirely honest, and it makes you look just a wee bit foolish.

Instead of making resolutions, let's agree that we'll try to do what's best for us and those around us.  It shouldn't take a holiday celebration to do that.  We should have been doing that every day anyway.  When we're faced with the task of looking back on our life, we will not find peace and joy in whether we kept our New Years resolutions (and not just because we didn't).  What will carry us through is the understanding that we valued what was truly important in life:  making the most of each moment, loving and caring for those around us, and, perhaps most importantly, living for others and not just ourselves.

A very important person in my life once told me that character is defined as the ability to carry out a strong resolution long after the mood in which you first made it has left you.  As we hit the ground running this year, let's remember to make only the commitments we know we will keep, to not commit to those things we cannot guarantee, and to know the difference between the two.

Now, let's go get 'em.
